Truth or Dare?

The epic game which is truth or dare is played by both bashful youths and bored adults alike. Either one of the options can lead to extreme levels of embarrassment. This is usually through the revelation of some sort of hidden thought or feeling, or by having to do something which borders on the fringes of acceptable. Many would not see this game as having any worth, but its title can be applied to almost all aspects of life.

In terms of truth, it’s simple: Be honest. It creates a sense of genuineness when you connect with others – something which is key to maintaining a relationships. When you connect with your goals on such a level, you’re able to engage in such a way which isn’t usually possible. You are essentially taking part in activities because YOU want to. You are able to gain a sense of why you are doing things. As a result, you will inject more effort and commitment into whatever you’re doing, which is sure to increase the likelihood of your reaching your goal.

When I think of ‘dare’, three things come to mind:

Dare to dream: We all have dreams and wishes. Aims we have had since childhood or maybe something we decided to do last week. These dreams are important, and the bigger the better. It’s easy to put ideas we have into a box, but don’t. It is self-limiting; and wastes the almost limitless potential which we all possess. You will only believe as far as you achieve – so believe in yourself and your own abilities. Dream ambitiously. Even if you don’t quite reach your goal, you will still end up in a much better place than if you had decided to settle for less.

Dare to take action: Once you have a dream, you must inject some action for it to become a reality. If you have a thought and you decide not to do anything, it remains just that – a thought. Do something, anything. Don’t be worried about doing the ‘right’ thing, because whatever you do will tell you which direction to move in. If things go right, you keep on moving; if they go wrong, you readjust. What you must not do is freeze or stop. Inaction kills possibility. But every action brings you one step closer to your dream.

Dare to be bold: Once you’ve done all this, being bold is the next logical step. You know where you want to go. You know why you’re going in that direction. And you’re taking the steps you need to get there. But this is never enough. You will run into hurdles and barriers, and the road will get tough at some point. But this is no reason to stop. Equip yourself with courage. Take steps which you may be unsure about. Gamble. Be confident in your actions. Most importantly, let go of any fears concerning your goals. Just go for it, and give it your all, because that’s all anyone can ask of you.
