We’ve all had that moment; when faced with a mountainous and daunting task, a feeling of self doubt takes over. Apprehension and insecurity flow through our minds as we pose the question to ourselves: is this even possible? The answer? Yes. Always a yes. No matter how overly ambitious, arduous or challenging a job may seem, it is never impossible. There are assignments which can border on the brink of unattainable in their nature, but they always lie on the margin; there are many things which are extraordinarily difficult, but nothing is impossible.

The easiest way to overcome this feeling? In my opinion, there are 2 things we must try to do in these situations: actually get started, and persevere.

When you are set a tough assignment, the hardest thing to do is to get started. You’ll find yourself caught in an internal battle, as you wonder how the very best way you can go about completing the project is. Your natural will not to be wrong will intervene when you feel you have a solution, and a game of mental tennis will proceed to take place as you struggle to pin down a concrete, foolproof route to success. While all this is going on, and you strive to find this perfect blueprint (which is nonexistent by the way), you are making very little progress. In fact, you are making none. By doing all this deliberating, and taking no action, you are getting nowhere. Once you get started however, no matter which direction you move in, no matter how small the steps you take, momentum is gained. Even if you take the wrong road, you’re gaining knowledge which will mean you know which direction to go in next time. Do nothing, get nowhere. Take action, get closer to success.

This alone is not enough; one must persevere. It is all well and good to take action. But sometimes when you do, things don’t quite work out, or you only get halfway to your goal, and this is when you must try again. It may not be easy, and circumstances may prevent you from going down your desired route. But tough it out. Find a different way. Our ideas do not always go according to plan, but always be geared for a second, third, even fourth attempt. Fail to retry, and once again, get nowhere. Repeatedly take action, and success is yours.

Think of our lives like building a house. You lay the foundation and the structure, and brick by brick, you begin to build. Assuming that you wish to enjoy your house, laying down the first few bricks is a must. If you get something wrong, or you find you are using the wrong materials, it’s not a case of ceasing the assembly process; you knock down the relevant section and start again. If the rain or snow comes, or you run out of funds, you do not stop building. By any means necessary, you find a way, you battle for through tough times while you visualise the end product. But you never stop. Because like the house, by desisting in your efforts, you almost certainly will not reach your goals – and will never enjoy your successes.
